Youth Jazz Bands

WollCon has an incredible, international reputation for Jazz which has been developed through the work of Head of the Jazz Program, Eric Dunan.

The program includes large Jazz Orchestras to small combo groups and presents concerts throughout the year, many of which include amazing guest musicians.

A key part of the Jazz Program are WollCon’s Youth Jazz Bands. These bands comprise small ensembles for players keen to explore some of the tenets of Jazz (including improvisation), and larger ensembles such as the Conservatorium Jazz Ensemble for more advanced players who enjoy a challenge and the prospect of performing around the region at Festivals and events. For those who are still developing their abilities, the Jazz Band is a great option to learn repertoire in various styles and to hone performance skills.

It can be almost guaranteed that if you are in a Youth Jazz Ensemble you will find yourself with the chance to perform regularly alongside some amazing musicians and sharing the cool-jazz-vibe with audiences and communities across the region.

For more experienced students to work on advanced ensemble skills, playing challenging jazz literature with a focus on Latin, swing, bebop, and modern jazz styles, this is a place where many students form a life-long passion for this style of music.

In this jazz band you will hone your ensemble skills and learn how to swing! In the immortal words of Duke Ellington, “It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing!”.
