Choirs

Who doesn’t love to sing? Singing is one of the most accessible and joyful ways in which we can make music together.

Our Choirs cover everything from contemporary to classical ensemble singing. Participants learn to sing in harmony, whatever the genre and to take part in performances throughout the year.

Our Children’s Choir for younger aged children is led by Kate Whitworth. Members will enjoy exploring different styles of singing and repertoire – in harmony of course!

High school-aged children can choose between our Contemporary Youth Chorus, the Melodettes or sign up for a small jazz vocal group (the Hummingbirds).

There is also our non-auditioned community choir the Conchords, and our latest addition, the WollCon Chamber Choir, for the more experienced singer.

The Programs below are loosely listed in order of typical age appropriateness, from younger to older.

CYC is for students of high school age (13-17 yrs) who are interested in smaller group 3 & 4 part singing. This group is a natural extension of the Melodettes program and provides more challenging materials across a range of contemporary styles.

Led by Trish Delaney-Brown (WollCon Head of Vocals; Award winning songwriter and certified Estill Master Trainer) the Contemporary Youth Chorus (CYC) is your vocal skills and group singing boot camp!

Want to develop your range, flexibility and stamina?
Increase your understanding of how the voice works?
Be able to hold your own in harmony singing?
Get creative vocally?

Not just a singing ensemble, CYC will start each rehearsal with a Vocal Skills session – consider it your weekly training session at the voice gym – before launching into repertoire drawn from jazz, contemporary and music theatre genres, fine tuning performance skills as the weeks progress.

CYC rehearsal schedule:
4:45-5:15pm Vocal Skills – technical training and exploration of voice mechanics.
5:15-6:00 pm Repertoire and performance skills.

If you want to understand your voice better, have an interest in harmony singing, want a practical and creative outlet for your singing … then CYC is for you.

WollCon’s Community Choir The Conchords is a weekly dose of all the happy hormones that come from community, connection and joining together in song! The focus is on a positive rehearsal atmosphere that encourages each member to let their voice ring, and to feel comfortable stretching themselves across a range of material that embraces pop and gospel tunes to jazz, folk and musical theatre in a safe, supportive and joyful space.

The Conchords regularly perform at WollCon events and arrangements are provided along with practice tracks.

This is an un-auditioned community ensemble.

WollCon Chamber Choir

Following the success of the 2022 Wollongong Messiah Choir, participants are continuing as a large chamber choir lead by Hayden Barrington. The Choir will be for more experienced singers who enjoy singing classical choral repertoire, and choral arrangements of songs.  It is anticipated that the Choir will sing in performances in and around Wollongong as well as taking advantage of opportunities to join other larger performances.

The Choir meet on Thursday evenings between 6:30pm and 8:30pm at UOW.

“I love the ‘aha’ moments that students get when they realise what it feels like to work with the voice rather than against it – the world of expression that opens up for them.”
