Claire Hollander

Trumpet | Trombone

What do you teach at the Con?

Trumpet and trombone.

What genres do you teach?

Everything, but I specialise in jazz and improvisation.

What is it that you love about teaching music – particularly at Wollongong Conservatorium?

I love music, and want to introduce others to being musicians as I think we enjoy life more!

Please share a particular career highlight and why it’s special to you.

It was great to play on the cross-cultural project “Bridge of Dreams” with Sandy Evans as a member of Sirens Big Band. We worked with leading Indian musicians , featuring vocalist Shubha Mudgal, and performed at the City Recital Hall as part of the Sydney Festival in 2019. I love the section playing in Big Bands, along with the chance to improvise and be creative. This project was challenging and unique.

What’s one piece of music that you’d recommend people listen to?

“Blue Train”, Lee Morgan recording.
