Congratulations Cameron Carter!
The WollCon end of year Performance Day (11 December 2022) was another wonderful opportunity to experience the musical ability of our students, and in particular four very talented students competing for $1000 in prize money in the annual concerto competition – but there can only be one winner.
Congratulations to violinist Cameron Carter – the 2022 WollCon Concerto competition winner.
Dr Joanne Drimatis the adjudicator for the Concerto competition says it is always a privilege to be asked to adjudicate any competition. She’s pictured below with (from left) Cameron Carter, Hana Lee, Albert Au and Johnathan Zhang.
“My role as an adjudicator is to provide relevant feedback to the competitors so that they feel inspired to continue on their musical path. All of the candidates who performed on Sunday demonstrated a deep musical integrity in their playing which was a wonderful representation of the excellent teaching that is occurring in the Wollongong area.”
Joanne said that it is always difficult to decide on a winner, but in any competition, it is finding excellence in both technical facility and the musical intent of the performer that determines success in a competition.
“Although every performer demonstrated elements of each of these skills in their performances it was Cameron Carter who performed beautifully and clearly demonstrated to the audience a sincere musical intent as well as a high level of technical expertise in his performance. Many congratulations to Cameron and to all the other performers on the day.”
Cameron Carter has been playing violin for the past 13 years, and for this year’s competition performed the 1st movement of Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G minor, op. 26.
“I believe that winning the competition would not have been possible without my enjoyment for the piece I selected to play, the support of my teacher Scott Taggart, and my accompanist Lisa Baraldi who with her incredible skill kept the piece moving despite the mistakes I made. I am very grateful for the opportunity to perform and I wish to use the feedback from Dr. Drimatis to continue improving.”
