ChiME | Ensembles | In Schools Program

What do you teach at the Con?

ChiME, Transition, school concert bands and guitar ensembles, assist with the Community Ensembles Program.

What is it that you love about teaching music – particularly at Wollongong Conservatorium?

I love being able to be with students as they take their first steps in learning music and playing a musical instrument. All my roles bring me joy when I am able to share a moment of musical success with my students. I enjoy working and talking with colleagues at the Con sharing educational and musical experiences and helping each other to better our programs.

Please share a particular career highlight and why it’s special to you.

I love the wide range of performances in which we are able to participate with school bands and community groups. For example HONKoz, Bands in the Mall, Illawarra Folk Festival, Engadine Band Festival, in the community on the streets, etc. The ‘Not the Proms’ evening at the Town Hall stands out to me as a highlight from my time at the Con. It is so wonderful playing with people from every corner of the community who do it purely for the joy of playing together. We packed the Town Hall, the audience was with us every step of the way and there was a symbiotic joy and excitement about community music.
