What do you teach at the Con?
I teach Guitar.
What genres do you teach?
I teach all genres, from classical, to jazz, to contemporary, to your own genre that you hopefully invent!
What is it that you love about teaching music – particularly at Wollongong Conservatorium?
To give the gift of a connection with music is to give access to a never ending wellspring of spiritual nourishment. This is made much easier at the conservatorium because of the wonderful physical space of the campus and the teaching and administrative staff that both inspire and create an environment that can help us focus solely on teaching, as all the other work required to get to the teaching point has been done.
Please share a particular career highlight and why it’s special to you.
I’d say my personal career highlight is having my original music and band perform with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Opera House. This is closely followed by seeing a generation of younger musicians be directly inspired by my artistic output in the form of their own artistic choices. The same can be said when I see past students as adults with music as an important part of their lives.
What’s one piece of music that you’d recommend people listen to?
I’d recommend you listen to this song of mine. I hope you can hear the sense of wonder, awe and joy I have for music.
