The concert is also an opportunity to showcase the work of local programs supported by the Red Shield Appeal fundraiser.

Over $800,000 needs to be raised so that the Salvation Army can continue its community work in the Illawarra and this concert is an important contribution to that funding.

“The BlueScope WIN Community Foundation is a proud long term supporter of both the Red Shield Appeal and the Wollongong Conservatorium’s BlueScope Youth Orchestra (BSYO), so this concert is a true celebration of how the business and general community can come together to support people of the Illawarra, as well as providing the community with a quality musical experience.”

The BSYO will perform their ‘Through the Ages’ repertoire – a range of lively pieces including Vanhal’s energetic and inspiring Symphony in D Minor, Vivaldi’s famous Winter from The Four Seasons, as well as five dance pieces spanning the centuries. These include Khachaturian’s Waltz from Masquerade, Begovic’s Underground Tango, Dvorak’s Czech Polka, Australian composer Ross Edwards Ecstatic Dances for two flutes and Kurt Weill’s Youkali from The Threepenny Opera.

Audiences will also hear beautiful renditions of Sibelius’ Andante Festivo and Mascagni’s sublime Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana.

The violin soloists performing Vivaldi’s Winter will alternate between Cameron Carter, WollCon’s 2022 Concerto Competition winner, and Hana Lee, a former WollCon Concerto Competition winner (2021, 2020).
