What do you teach at the Con?
Drum-set
What genres do you teach?
Jazz, Rock, Pop, Latin (Afro-Cuban & Brazilian), Funk, Hip-hop/RnB, Indie-folk & Drum kit based music.
What is it that you love about teaching music – particularly at Wollongong Conservatorium?
I love watching musicians grow, and to be part of their musical journey. I have had some life changing teachers in my time as a drum student and I hope to be able to pass on my knowledge and skills to the next generation of drummers coming through WollCon. I have been teaching in different settings for a large percentage of my life, being able to be a mentor for them, and allowing them a space for forming independent thought and opinions about music, alongside with gaining skills behind the kit is why I do the work.
Please share a particular career highlight and why it’s special to you.
I have been fortunate to have many performance opportunities, although I have had lots of memorable moments taking a ‘sideman’ role as a supporting drummer. I have two original bands based in Wollongong ’The Midnight Tides’ & ‘Giraffehead’ and being able to perform original music in a collaborative project with friends, will always have a special place in my heart.
Particular moments that comes to mind is more special shows such as ‘Album launches’ where we have been working towards a goal and being able to share it with the world.
What’s one piece of music that you’d recommend people listen to?
I want to recommend an African band ’The Cavemen’, the drummer & bass player lead the band and have such incredible touch on their instruments.
Also an honourable mention, Lingus by Snarky Puppy.
