What is it that you love about teaching music – particularly at Wollongong Conservatorium?
I love helping young musicians express themselves through music. I get great satisfaction in finding the perfect piece for a student, and helping them trouble-shoot ways to overcome any technical or musical obstacles. If they work hard, take the advice, and trust the process, they always surprise themselves with what they can achieve!
Please share a particular career highlight and why it’s special to you.
In 2017 I was fortunate enough to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada desert (on the same tour). Performing in such contrasting environments was a truly surreal experience. On this tour of the USA I met some incredible musicians and made some lifelong friends!
What’s one piece of music that you’d recommend people listen to?
If I can indulge in two, I would recommend listening to any pieces by Hania Rani (Polish) and Fazil Say (Turkish). These contemporary composers have a very unique flavour that is definitely worth exploring!
