Alumnus Jeremy Boulton

WollCon alumnus Jeremy Boulton returns to Australia for his Cabaret debut in Wollongong, and as soloist in the Handel Messiah at the Sydney Town Hall.

Since 2023, WollCon alumnus Jeremy Boulton has been singing professionally across Europe in opera, concert, operetta, and musical theatre. From next season, he will be a house principal artist at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, Germany (formerly known as the Bavarian State Operetta), after completing two years in the theatre’s opera studio.

Having made his solo debut with the Bavarian Radio Choir this year under Peter Dijkstra in the Brahms Requiem, as well as performing as a guest artist at the Saarländisches Staatstheater, Stadttheater St. Gallen, and Stadttheater Erfurt, Jeremy returns to Australia for a whirlwind one-week visit this December 2025. It will include his cabaret debut, Goin’ Home at The Phoenix Theatre, as well as performing as soloist in the Handel Messiah at the Sydney Town Hall.

In addition, he’ll continue to fulfil his duties as a NSW Education Alumni Ambassador, visiting Illawarra public schools in conjunction with WollCon.

“It’s such a privilege to be coming home to perform for home crowds in Wollongong and Sydney, as well as to chat to students about how they can find a similar path into the arts. I’ve only been back once since leaving on a one-way ticket in 2022, so I’m really looking forward to touching base and reconnecting again with this part of the world.”

In addition to winning the Sydney International Song Prize adjudicated by Richard Bonynge, Jeremy was the winner of Australia’s flagship opera singing competition, the IFAC Handa Australian Singing Competition. In his winner’s speech, Jeremy noted that his singing journey began when he took voice lessons at seven years old with soprano Rachel Bate – formerly WollCon’s Head of Voice.

“I loved singing lessons with Rachel. She was my teacher from when I was seven years old until I left high school, which included my time at WollCon. We worked through all sorts of styles as different performance opportunities came my way through school performances and local eisteddfods. Rachel also helped me prepare for my audition for the Sydney Conservatorium, which put me on the path to becoming an opera singer.”

Jeremy also developed a love for performing in other genres, including rock and jazz. “…I never was really able to get as far as I wanted when I was doing all of it at once and eventually had to stop to focus solely on classical singing, but I had a great time and learnt plenty along the way.”

After studying at the Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts and graduating from the Talent Development Project as a musical theatre artist, Jeremy made the switch to opera, inspired by a week-long experience at the Opera Australia Regional Student Scholarship program. Soon after, he enrolled at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he completed Bachelor and Master of Opera Performance degrees.

MUSICAL EDUCATION ADVICE?

“I cannot stress the importance of a good, open-minded attitude towards learning, along with the need for strong business acumen, extreme conscientiousness, and a constant devotion to your study.”

His advice for younger singers with similar aspirations is to first find a trustworthy and suitable teacher, to make a commitment to learning their teaching methodology, as well as daily practice to implement the teacher’s advice.

“There is nothing more important than putting in the hard yards consistently—for years, particularly at the beginning of study.”

Jeremy’s new show Goin’ Home at The Phoenix Theatre, Coniston, invites the audience on his journey from the beaches of Wollongong to the theatres of Germany where he performs today. Jeremy is joined on the keys by his friend, professional multi-disciplinary musician Su Hee Cho (Hamilton – Sydney Lyric Theatre, traditional Korean drummer) and Sydney-based actress Aimee McQueen for a night of opera, operetta, musical theatre, and everything else in between.
