Young Blood is a grassroots initiative supporting local school-aged bands and we were proud to see WollCon students involved at the La La Las event.
Designed to equip young musicians with real-world industry skills—from booking gigs and planning tours to marketing, promotion, and music release strategies—the Young Blood program is supported by the Department of Education and offers a practical pathway into a successful music career.
With a venue adapted for underage performers, the event gives students the chance to experience the energy and professionalism of a true live music environment. Young Blood aims to uncover emerging talent, build vital industry networks, and foster a new generation of passionate live music supporters across NSW.
The lineup at last Saturday’s afternoon event (14th June) at La La Las (and presented by Yours & Owls), included 16-year old guitarist and singer/songwriter Sam Vukelic, who has been playing for 8 years and is currently enrolled at WHSPA and WollCon, playing a range of genres such as pop, rock, jazz and more.
“Our Jazz Program Lead Dave Rodriguez told me about this gig and I’m absolutely stoked with the opportunity, although it is naturally quite nerve-wracking performing my original songs in front of an audience. My two originals are “Lady in the Moon” and “Touch” and I’ve gathered my friends, Brooke Basu and Melody Curnow, to play bass and drums. I have never performed my originals with a band before, so I learnt about the importance of communication and consistency with rehearsals.”
Congratulations Sam, Brooke and Melody – we look forward to following your journey.
