What do you teach at the Con?
Voice.
What genres do you teach?
All types of styles and genres. From Classical through to Pop. I have a focus on technique so that all of my students are singing with a good understanding of vocal health and taking care of their instrument.
What is it that you love about teaching music – particularly at Wollongong Conservatorium?
I enjoy teaching, it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I see students grow and develop into their voices. Watching their confidence grow is a wonderful boost too. The Con creates a welcoming and calm atmosphere, with nature all around us to be inspired by when we are working.
Please share a particular career highlight and why it’s special to you.
I’m constantly working on my operatic career, and through teaching I get to show my students that we are always learning no matter our age or professional level. My career highlight, to date would be performing at the Opera House in Opera Australia’s La Boheme on NYE. To be surrounds by friends and incredible professionals was such a blessing and something I hope to do again in the future.
What’s one piece of music that you’d recommend people listen to?
Vissi D’Arte, performed here by Maria Callas. She is one of the most incredible Toscas and opera singers we have ever had the blessing to experience. This industry would be a little less bright without her influence and voice. Here she brings drama and voice in a way that edges its way into your soul and envelopes you. Her technique is so faultless, and she is able to move around the stage with such poise even when the piece is filled with such emotion. It’s incredible.
