inspired by wollongong

Professor Matthew Hindson has created a piece for WollCon’s BlueScope Youth Orchestra to celebrate the group’s long-standing partnership with the steel-making company. It’s only fitting that Matthew composes the music since he worked as a computer programmer at the steel works before becoming a composer.

Hear his interview with ABC Radio on Monday 28th November (from 1:17:48) – discussing his composition ‘Big Steel’.

The other major collaborative work will be a composition from celebrated jazz composer and musician Novak Manojlovic. Born in Wollongong, Novak is a composer, pianist and improviser, who has become one of Australia’s leading jazz musicians. He began at WollCon with classical music studies and the Jazz program and eventually went on to win the 2019 Freedman Jazz Fellowship. He returns to WollCon with a composition to be performed by the Wollongong Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra, the BlueScope Youth Orchestra and the Humming Birds.

The concert will also feature vibrant street music with WollCon’s Con Artists and other community ensembles, in collaboration with our band in residence that’s been workshopping with WollCon all year,  the Hot Potato Band.

The concert will end with an after-show Birthday Party and DJ in the Music Lounge, where the public is welcome to stay and be part of the Wollongong music community.
