While internationally acclaimed guitar duo Slava and Leonard Grigoryan drew a crowd to their stunning performance at St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in Wollongong, it was an earlier moment that stole the hearts of many — a hands-on workshop with budding guitarists at WollCon.
In town to showcase their deeply personal new album Amistad, the Grigoryan Brothers took time out to connect with the next generation of musicians in an intimate and inspiring guitar workshop. Organised by WollCon’s Head of Guitar, Nigel Jones, the workshop welcomed students of varying levels, offering them the rare opportunity to learn directly from two of Australia’s most revered classical guitarists.
One parent who attended described the event as a “uniquely valuable opportunity”, praising the brothers for their generosity, warmth, and insight:
“They are arguably Australia’s foremost exponents of classical guitar. I expected that they would play and discuss their music — but it was far more than that.”
During the workshop, the Grigoryans performed two pieces, then turned the spotlight to four WollCon students — all from Nigel Jones’ studio — each at different stages of their musical journey. The brothers listened with care, offering feedback that was as instructive as it was compassionate.
“Each student performance was discussed in terms of its strengths and challenges. The discussion was expertly instructive but also so kind and friendly that everybody was validated.”
Beyond the performances, the workshop evolved into a heartfelt dialogue. The brothers fielded questions from the audience with humour and honesty, creating a warm, familial atmosphere.
“There was a shock of understanding and insight in the room — it was something special.”
The visit formed part of their national tour for Amistad, an album that celebrates friendship through music. With compositions gifted by renowned musicians from across the world, including Leo Brouwer, Dominic Miller, Ralph Towner, Luke Howard, and more, Amistad showcases the Grigoryans’ deep connections in the international music community.
Yet even with such global reach, it’s clear their passion lies in sharing — not just performing. Their Wollongong workshop was a testament to that spirit.
WollCon extends its heartfelt thanks to Nigel Jones for bringing the workshop to life, and especially to Slava and Leonard Grigoryan for their generosity, inspiration, and for nurturing the musical hearts of our local community.
