An opportunity to sing in the Sydney Opera House
A partnership between WollCon, University of Wollongong and Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.

This is a special project for singers who wish to sing Handel’s masterpiece ‘Messiah’ in Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, in a choir of over 300 singers accompanied by a full orchestra.

For the performances you will be joining an amazing choir made up of Sydney Philharmonia Choirs Symphony Chorus, SPC’s Christmas Choir and singers from communities in and around Sydney – which includes Wollongong!

This event will be the first major concert series involving members of the community to be presented in Sydney Opera House following its refurbishment – it’s an historic event!

The project runs from late July 2022 to early December 2022.

Who is it for?

Anyone over the age of 16 who likes to sing, can pitch (i.e., hear a note and sing the same note back), can follow music and has the time to learn the music!  If you have had some experience of singing in a choir that’s great – but not essential.

What is involved?

Registering
If you are interested, go to this form and register with WollCon – at this stage it’s entirely free.

Taster Sessions
There are four ‘taster sessions’ on Wednesday evenings, starting from 20 July (until 10 August 2022):

  • Wednesday Evenings 6.30pm – 8.30pm
  • The Music Room: Top Floor Gillian Broadbent Building: University of Wollongong.
  • Car parking at UOW in car park P4

The taster sessions will help you get a sense of whether you are going to enjoy the experience, have time to attend rehearsals and learn the music.

  • Sydney Philharmonia Choirs will provide MP3 rehearsal tracks for everyone taking part to aid learning. You can also buy/hire music from Sydney Philhamonia Choirs.  The edition of the Messiah being performed is edited by Clifford Bartlett and published by Oxford.

During the taster sessions we will outline the entire commitment required and the costs you will need to cover to take part.

  • If you decide to commit you will be asked to register your commitment (after 10th August) with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and pay their participation fee. The fee covers all your rehearsals and access to the Opera House for the rehearsals and concerts in Sydney.

Rehearsals
Once you have decided to take part in the full project, you will need to commit to the majority of rehearsals which will be conducted by Hayden Barrington:

  • Wednesday Evenings 6.30pm – 8.30pm
  • The Music Room: Top Floor Gillian Broadbent Building: University of Wollongong.
  • Every Wednesday starting on 17 August 2022 through until 30 November 2022 (there may be some weeks off during this time for school holidays – but that depends how rehearsals are going!)
  • Car parking at UOW in car park P4
