Community Music event launches WollCon’s 50th Birthday & Fundraising Campaign

It is great to be back performing music in the Wollongong CBD again. The Art Gallery is such a wonderful venue for orchestral music. We are excited to be playing music together again.” – David Rooney (WollCon’s Head of Ensembles).

WollCon’s first 50th Birthday event on the 2nd April at the Wollongong Art Gallery will not only celebrate the return of community music after two years of lockdown, but also launch our Plus1 fundraising campaign with Creative Partnerships Australia (CPA).

The concert – ‘Celebrating our Community Musicians’ – will see the WollCon Community Orchestra (conducted by David Rooney) play works by Haydn, Respighi and James Ledger, while the Five Islands String Orchestra (conducted by Adrian Davis) will perform works by Katy Abbot, Brian Balmages, Yukiko Nishimura and more.

Entry to the performance is by donation, with the Friends of WollCon Community Music managing donations as the audience arrives, and every donation will contribute to WollCon’s Plus 1 fundraising campaign called ‘Musical Futures’.

Plus1 matches every donation dollar-for-dollar thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia (CPA).  The program boosts fundraising initiatives of small to medium sized arts organisations like WollCon and helps attract new donors and partners.

WollCon’s ‘Musical Futures’ campaign’s target is $15K which will be matched making the campaign worth a total of $30K to WollCon.  The money raised will support the next generation of great musicians, the commissioning of new works by our Alumni to be performed throughout 2022 and our artist in residence ‘The Hot Potato Band’ who are working with our community ensembles throughout the year.

2022 is such an exciting year for WollCon.  We are inviting our community to help us celebrate by donating to the Musical Futures Campaign which will see WollCon bring about positive change through music for many years to come.  Many young and community musicians will benefit from this campaign throughout the year and every donation will be matched by Creative Partnerships – so there are many good reasons to donate at this time.” – David Francis WollCon CEO

About the Orchestras:

After presenting a one-off concert in December 2015 at The Music Lounge, the WollCon Community Orchestra became part of the WollCon Community Music Program and has continued to grow as an all-ages amateur symphony orchestra for intermediate to advanced players.

The Five Islands String Orchestra (FISO) was established in 2019 as an opportunity for adult string players with limited ensemble experience.
